The mid-life years for us girls can be a hormone roller coaster. The body changes (I like to think, matures like a fine wine), our attitude changes (less tolerant some would say) and I want to believe that for many women, we are empowered with great knowledge and awesome support to help us all transition into this fabulous time of our lives.
That’s right, Menopause and beyond, is no longer a time of beige, crisis and insecurity. Todays modern woman is standing in her own power embracing change because she is becoming more aware than ever of her evolving body.
What I have learnt over the years working with women and business and more importantly going through Menopause myself, is that there are some things we can do help us transition in the best way into mid life taking our control back and living our best life.
With so many peri-menopausal symptoms it is great to treat your whole self
Your Bones matter – pick up a weight
Resistance training or weight training is vital as part of components of fitness and especially important as estrogen leaves the body. We need estrogen to keep bones strong and healthy. Lifting weights or doing own bodyweight exercises are so awesome for this. If I was Queen for the day, I would insist that everyone picks up weights and train with them at every age.
Your Heart is a muscle – move more, sit less
Your beating heart is also a muscle and just like the rest of your awesome magnificent changing body, you must keep that heart muscle trained. The menopause years may be the start of niggles, so some prefer walking then jogging and thats ok. Whatever you do to get out of breath, do it and plenty of it. The health experts say move more and sit less.
Join a Group – move and chat with others
Woman supporting women is a powerful thing. Facing the transition into menopause can be simple or complex and sharing your experiences with similar Goddesses (face it we are all Goddesses) can help us with our mental wellness. Sometimes we may be suffering when we shouldn’t be. With over 70 symptoms of menopause, we have plenty to talk about and talking is good. Get it off your chest!
Your mental health matters – meditate
On the subject of mental health, the mid-life years can be quite stressful. I call it our life laundry. Kids leaving home, older parents, job changes, worries about the future and now of course COVID-19. I strongly urge meditation and even better yoga and Pilates or even Pilability with mindfulness practise. This is proven to reduce stress hormones and fire off happy hormones. Start with simple breathing techniques and grow from there.
Don’t be palmed off by your GP or Freaked out by The Non experts!
There are a lot of non qualified “so called” experts and influencers out there. Stick with those who are experts in the field of menopause and ageing wellness. If your GP says it’s stress when you are midlife it is often connected to menopause. This is a time to keep a journal of any symptoms and use that to build your case. Sadly menopause is still under appreciated. Know your body. Learn about your changing health and embrace the change.
You are magnificent
Finally, remember who you are. Menopause can be an amazing time of life of your life. Don’t fear it, just own it, rock it and stretch it!
