He is in my falls prevention program. A hand of an old person to you but to me it is a sign that his confidence has improved so greatly that he can take his hand off the chair to steady his balance. A light touch.
You see, exercise isn’t the only support when someone is unsteady on their feet. Much of our work is around confidence, courage. and trust.
Trust is part of the relationship building in our work. It’s a people thing. Relationships need to be forged, once we have connected, then we build trust.
So remember we are running a falls prevention service. Our people are often fearful. So when we tell them that they are going to get on the floor they will say as if its the first time we have heard this “you can get me on the floor, but you won’t get me off it”
Trust the Journey – You are Getting Stronger
They have to trust the process. Our work is evidenced based. That means that the science tells us that if they perform the moves, repeat the activities at home for a number of hours then we can reduce falls and build confidence.
How do we know we are making progress with their confidence? Well moments like this photograph. Too often we hear “I can’t do that” and then they surprise themselves. Especially when they learn how to get on and off the floor safely.
That feeling inside when they have done something extraordinary and we all celebrate these moments of utter joy. That is why I love my role as postural stability instructor.
