Our Chief Medical Officer back in 1994 said “exercise is the wonder drug and should be prescribed to everyone”. Variations of this message have been promoted ever since. Sadly, the truth is, there is no money in movement but plenty in prescribing medication. Health and safety has disempowered us so we will not move someone until they have considerable qualifications.
NOTE: The above statement is conjecture. Discuss
Why is exercise so scary to deliver?
What do we think exercise looks like to an older person or someone with physical or learning difficulties?
We know that exercise has a huge impact on our health at any age.
Due to our reservations around health and safety we, as a population, are more inclined to put Joan in the corner and keep her still, than run the risk of moving her in case we do something wrong.
Newsflash
Joan’s leg won’t fall off if we get her to sway and move her arms whilst singing Delilah.
What will happen though is that Joan will engage, laugh, move, increase her heart rate, smile, connect, become warmer, increase blood flow, increase oxygen, reduce stress hormones and increase happy hormones.
What is not to like about that?
